French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Course contents :
1) This course is devoted to manufacturing processes, with and without chips. It is a necessary complement to design, a any designed machine element has to be produced.
2) TABLE OF CONTENTS - Elementary discussion on steel production. Steel classification, following EURONORM and SAE/AISI. Casting, forging, stamping, wire-drawing, ewxtrusion, sheet metal working. Welding, soldering, oxygen-cutting. Elements of powder metallurgy. Metal cutting. Grinding. Lapping, honing, superfinisching, polishing. Unconventional processes : ultrasonic grinding, chemical engraving, electrochemical machining, electro-discharge machining, electron beam, laser machining, water jet machining, plasma cutting. Cutting theory : Piispanen-Merchant model, cutting temperature. Cutting angles, cutting power, tool wear. Tool materials. Roughness prediction. Chip control. Milling : down and up milling, power evaluation. Grinding : equivalent thickness, power consumption, grinding ratio, roughness prediction.
Learning outcomes of the course :
After this course, the sudent will be able to conceive a pertinent manufacturing process of a mechanical part.
He will also be able to conceive mechanical parts which are easy to produce and thus cheap.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
PREREQUISITES :
General mechanics, first bases of strength of materials.
COREQUISITES
Ther is a strong relation between this course and another one, which is CONCEPTION MECANIQUE (Mechanical design).
METHODES DE FABRICATION EN SERIE, a course of 1st master, makes use of the general concepts of the present course, in its part which is devoted to machining.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Oral course. The goal is that the student understands the processes, not that he learns everythig by heart.
Shop visits, in order to meet the industrial world.

Exercises and practical work in our laboratory and at Technifutur.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Lessons : face-to-face, 2d quadrimester, Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:30
Practicals : dates will be precised at the beginning of the academic year.
Recommended or required readings :
In french, first part edited by the AEES. 2d part (Machining) edited as a book by CEFAL, Liège, ISBN-13 : 9782871302346
Assessment methods and criteria :
Open book exam (2/3) and practical work reports (1/3).
What is needed is not memorization, but understanding.
Work placement(s) :
Organizational remarks :
Nothing
Contacts :
Prof. J.F. Debongnie. Concerning the shop : A. Martinez. Rendezvous not necessary but useful in order to avoid waste of time (telephone or E-Mail).
