Course contents :
| Classical linear algebra.
- Vector space : definition and various examples; - Subspaces, linear dependancy, span; - Dimension of a vector space, basis of a vector space; - Linear map between vector spaces, associated matrices, base change formulas; - Rank, kernel and image of a linear map, links between these concepts, rank of the transpose of a matrix; - Determinant of a matrix, inverse matrix and invertibility criteria; - Eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a linear operator. Two classical applications : 1) Linear systems of equations, 2) Linear reccurent equations. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| The object of the course is twofold :
1) give a basic knowledge of linear algebra, 2) lead from concrete objects to abstract concepts. |
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
| Course MATH0491-1 or equivalent. | |||||
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| The exercice lessons have a double objective : first illustrate the concepts and results of the theoretical part, and second provide applications of the theory. | |||||
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Wednesday morning at the Mathematical Institute, B37. | |||||
Recommended or required readings :
| One syllabus is available. | |||||
Assessment methods and criteria :
| June :
a) written examination on linear algebra : exercices., b) oral examination on linear algebra : theory. September : oral examination on linear algebra : theory and exercices. |
