Course contents :

The lecture will be dedicated to the history of political thought in the Renaissance (1350-1550). We will also had a glance on earlier periods of the Middle Ages to inform our discussion. The course will include the following chapters: 1. Methodology and introduction to the sources of the history of political thought; 2. Forms of political power (Empire, Republics, princely states); 3. The Great Schism and the conciliar theory; 4. The social order: the three orders of feudalism; 5. The questioning of the sovereign power and the tyrannicide; 6. Millenarianism and "challenge" to the social order. The lecture will develop links with other courses, including History of Humanism, Modern History and History of Burgundian States. For each chapter, bibliographical references will be provided. Those works will not part of the final test. The final exam will concist in an oral test.
