Course contents :

Introduction to research in medieval History. Pratical exercises.

Learning outcomes of the course :

At the end of the year, the student will be able

to initiate a documentary research
to identify a narrative or diplomatic source
to communicate orally or in writing the result of his/her research
to retranslate and to give a commentary on the latin texts given in courses

Prerequisite knowledge and skills :

HIST0040-1
HIST0082-1
Notions of classical latin grammar : LCLA0018-1 or LCLA0068-1
A good command of the oral and written French.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

Theoretical and pratical introduction to rules of historical criticism in medieval history and to the typology of western medieval sources.
Collaborative practical exercises in class and individual pratice in library.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

Face-to-face, on Friday 14.30-16 (A4/R100)
Introduction to bibliography : on Wednesday 16-18 (see posted schedule )
Supplementary bibliographical practices will be organized during the year (little groups and schedule to set up)

Assessment methods and criteria :

Continuously evaluation during the year (10%)
Written examination in January (10%)
Written and oral examination in June (80%)

The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 10% of the June final grade if > or = 10/20 (the mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20). Please note that the final exam for this course is cumulative.
