Crystallography and Mineralogy - Part A
Duration :
20h Th, 30h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in geology4
Lecturer :
Frédéric Hatert
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Course contents :
This course concerns the basics of Mineralogy, for students in Bloc2 Geology. The main chaptes are:
1. Geometric crystallography.
2. Optical crystallography.

Learning outcomes of the course :
This course has a double goal: (I) understand the morphology, the crystal structure, and the chemical composition of mineral; and (II) identify minerals with the polarizing microscope (transmitted light).
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
For this course, prerequisite basic knowledges are necessary (level Bloc1): mathematics, trigonometry, physics, optics, and inorganic chmistry.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Numerous hours of practical identification of minerals under the microscope.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face learning. It is absolutely necessary to attend all practicals.
Recommended or required readings :
Book to buy; F Hatert. Minéralogie: connaître et reconnaître les minéraux. Edition Ellipses, Paris. Price: 35 Euros.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Examinations in January. Oral examination for theory. Practical examination for microscopy.
No partial dispenses at examinations.
