| Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program | ||||||||
Course contents :
| This course is subdivided in two parts:
1. Elements of Mineralogy; 2. Elements of igneous and metamorphic petrology The organization and content of these two parts are presented in their respective descriptions. |
1st part : elements of mineralogy
| This course concerns the basics of Mineralogy, for students in BAC3 Geology Engineer and in Master1 Geography. The main chaptes are:
1. Geometric crystallography. 2. Optical crystallography. 3. Crystal chemistry. 4. Macroscopic identification of minerals. |
2nd part : Elements of Magmatic and metamorphic petrology
| An introduction to magmatic and metamorphic petrology | ||||||||
Learning outcomes of the course :
1st part : elements of mineralogy
| Understand the morphology and the internal structure of minerals. Learn to identify minerals in hand, and with the polarizing microscope in transmitted light. | ||||||||
2nd part : Elements of Magmatic and metamorphic petrology
| General overview of the main types of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and their conditions of formation | ||||||||
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
1st part : elements of mineralogy
| Basic knowledge (level BAC1) in mathematics, trigonometry, physics, optics, and inorganic chemistry. | ||||||||
2nd part : Elements of Magmatic and metamorphic petrology
| General geology | ||||||||
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
1st part : elements of mineralogy
| Numerous hours of practical identification of minerals under the microscope. The macroscopic identification of minerals is not included in the hours mentioned in the programm of this course (personal supplementary training). | ||||||||
2nd part : Elements of Magmatic and metamorphic petrology
| 4 lectures of 2H and 4 labs | ||||||||
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
1st part : elements of mineralogy
| Face-to-face learning. It is absolutely necessary to attend all practicals. | ||||||||
2nd part : Elements of Magmatic and metamorphic petrology
| face-to-face | ||||||||
Recommended or required readings :
1st part : elements of mineralogy

Assessment methods and criteria :
1st part : elements of mineralogy
| Examinations in June. Oral examination for theory. 2 practical examinations for microscopy and macroscopic identifcation. No partial dispense will be allowed. | ||||||||
