Course contents :

| This course describes a series of natural hazard to which building structures can be subjected to. It explains their effects on buildings and the way these structures could be designed in order to offer a satisfactory behaviour and achieve safety to the persons. The following items are treated successively: earthquakes, flooding, fires, storm wind, impact, explosion. A stress is put on seismic design and fire design. The concept of structural robustness seen as the first line of defence against exceptional actions is introduced. The course mainly covers the design concepts rather than the analysis methods. | ||||||||

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of this class, the student will able to design a building that will behave correctly against accidental actions. He/She will know the different strategies that lead to a sane structural behaviour in case of major hasard. The lecture develops critical thinking skills and creativity with regards to the unusual load paths that have to be imagined. | ||||||||

Prerequisite knowledge and skills :

| Some simple exercices, either demonstrated to the students or to be done by them, about eartquakes and fire. | ||||||||
