Course contents :
The course is organized cross-disciplinary, following the main steps of development of civil engineering projects:
  • Chap. 1 - Design : assessment of the sustainability of engineering works, lifecycle assessment, indicators, European regulations, concept of robustness, examples of design: waste disposal / geological barrier, mitigation of environmental impacts of hydraulic structures (fish pass, sediment continuity ...), compensation measures and assessment of the sustainability of hydropower schemes
  • Chap. 2 - Construction : environmentally-friendly construction, grey energy, management of wates and environmental disamenities, ...
  • Chap. 3 - Operation : energy consumption, maintenance, environmental monitoring, sustainable management of hydraulic structures
  • Chap. 4 - End-of-life : soil rehabilitation, hydromoprhological restoration and river renaturation, reuse and recycling, adaptibiliy and design for deconstruction.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Based on the whole range of knowledge acquired by the students during their curriculum in civil engineering, this course will show them how to combine different choices of design, material and techniques to minimize environmental impacts of engineering works.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Prerequisites: minimum one year of master in civil or environmental engineering.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course is based on lectures, seminars given by professional engineers and practical works.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face lectures.
In 2015-2016, the course is given in French.
Recommended or required readings :
Slides used during the lectures are made available for the student on eCampus.
The teacher also recommends the reading of complementary material.
Assessment methods and criteria :
A written exam takes place in January and September. No partial exemption is granted.
