Study Programmes 2015-2016
GBIO0021-1
Laboratory Project
Duration :
44h Pr, 16h Labo., 8h Proj.
Number of credits :
Bachelor in engineering5
Bachelor in engineering5
Lecturer :
Thomas Desaive, Liesbet Geris
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Course contents :
This laboratory project touches upon the different aspects of experimental research in the field of biomedical engineering (simulations, measurements, in vitro and in vivo work, ethical committee).  These differents aspects will be studied by means of smaller sub-projects:

  • Genetics : practical work in animal genetics
  • Electrophysiology : Registration of an action potential in worms.
  • Synthetic Biology : Overview and implementation of a synthetic module in E. coli
  • Animal Ethics : Overview and discussion
  • Experimental data acquisition and analysis: Thomas Desaive
Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of the course, the students will have acquired an overview of methods and experimental techniques used in biology. They will be capable of appreciating experimental work in biology and they will have the ability to process biological data.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
  • GBIO0002-1: Genetics and molecular biology
  • GBIO0020-1: Physiologie
  • GBIO0005-1: Introduction to neurosciences
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course will consist of ex-cathedra presentations, different biological laboratory projects and data processing involving Matlab.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
face-to-face
Recommended or required readings :
none
Assessment methods and criteria :
Detailed individual reports (in the style of scientific publications) on each of the different topics (75%).
Oral exam discussing the lab reports in june and september (25%).
Detailed modalities:
  • Compulsory attendance to each of the laboratories
  • Detailed report (style scientific publication) of each of the laboratories (20% per lab).
  • Maximum of 7 pages, arial 12, line spacing single, 2-3 figures. Additional specifications will be given for each of the laboratories.
  • Send in the reports maximally 15 days after the laboratory has ended in electronic version (pdf) to Liesbet Geris.
  • Oral exam on the rapports and concepts of the laboratories in June and September
  • A missing report = 2nd exam period
  • Plagiarism = 2nd exam period
  • Possibility to redo the reports (not the laboratories themselves) for the 2nd exam period
Work placement(s) :
Organizational remarks :
The course will take place in the 2nd quadrimester, the exact dates will be determined later.
The responsable persons for the different labs are:

  • Genetics : Ingrid Struman
  • Electrophysiology : Julie Dethier, Raphaël Liégeois
  • Synthetic Biology : Bernard Joris, Liesbet Geris
  • Animal Ethics : Pierre Drion
