Course contents :
This course provides an approach to the management of forests in crisis in the context of a multidisciplinary forestry management. It describes the present situation of the temperate forests as well as the various threats that hang on these ecosystems.
Insects and fungi are part of the forest dynamics. In some cases, however, they can have a negative impact on many of the various aspects of the forests such as growth and survival of trees, quality and productivity of timber and non-timber products, or even their recreational value and attractiveness.
The impact of pests and diseases on the forests is explained, and the population evolution is studied bearing in mind present and future climate changes.
Pest control strategies are put forward for the protection of the forests.
This course looks at the dynamic and issues of forestry management versus natural conditions with a critical eye. It offers a method for the diagnosis of declining forests and for the anticipation of crisis situations that all foresters are likely to meet in their professional careers.
This forest management course is divided in 7 units:
- Forest ecosystems resilience and health of temperate forests - Abiotic causes of declining forests - Human causes of declining forests - Biotic causes of declining forests - Diagnosis of weakened trees - Forest health survey - Forest health management
Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of the course the student will be capable of:
- Identifying abiotic, biotic and human risks in forestry production in temperate forests
- Diagnosing declining trees
- Identifying the main forest pests and pathogens
- Diagnosing declining populations
- Understanding the importance of a surveillance network for forest health
- Identifying the parties involved and the relevant decisions in case of sanitary crisis
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Participation to this course requires that the student be capable of identifying species and forestry stations in the field.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
This course will initially be given in a classroom. It will be interspersed with field visits allowing to compare theory and reality. Attendance to the field activities is mandatory.
Generally a field activity will aim at getting acquainted with the classification of deciduous crown trees, the diagnosis of a pest or a disease and the identification of a declining population.
One of the subjects of the course will be the object of a personal research study.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The assessment is based on an oral exam. 
On the basis of a real situation the assessment will be made, for example, on the capacity of:
- Explaining the rationale allowing to diagnose the presence of a pest, a disease or a decline
- Identifying and classifying predisposing factors, inciting factors and contributing factors in case of a sanitary crisis
- Identifying and classifying decisions to take in a situation of sanitary crisis.
