Course contents :
Natural durability. Damage caused by fungi and insects. Wood protection. Limitation of risks due to biocides use. Glues and wood gluing techniques . Laminated wood. Particule boards. - manufacturing - impact of species - industrial equipment - grading - characteristics - general rules for implementation - practical case study Structural boards. Cement boards. Fiber boards. Standards. Economical aspects.
Learning outcomes of the course :
To complete the wood technology study and to analyse the relationships between raw material characteristics and end-product properties (in-depth knowledge of particle board technology). After completing the course the student is expected to Identify the risk of damage wood and find the best solutions in order to develop wood preservation with reduced risks link to biocides use Conduct a experimental design aiming to identify the wood characteristics and wood technology with high impact on wood-based product quality Identify wood panels most suitable to technical needs in various practical conditions
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Basic knowledge of wood science
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Short presentation of wood technologies and processes Preparation of plants visits. Visit of various plants like softwoods and hardwoods sawmills,timber frame and gluelam, palette manufacture, MDF unit or paper mill. A report on a personnel issue and a visited wood industry

Assessment methods and criteria :
Written personal report (50%) and oral examination (50%). Exemption from the oral examination if the personal report is satisfactory. Joint evaluation with "Wood industry" (single examination)
