This course is clearly intended to prepare students for their final dissertation. Its goal is to reactivate the students' knowledge of information retrieval and management, offering a summary of the recommendations for a systematic exploration of scientific literature.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Partim II : Evidence Based Practice
The objective of this course is to provide the student with elements required to critically appraise the scientific data of his future professional activities, and his end of study work.
Students who complete the course will be able to: 1. Ask precise questions and use the answers to identify concepts (PICO); 2. Choose which resources to draw from, especially bibliographical databases such as Medline, PsycInfo, SPORTDiscus and EBM Reviews; 3. Use controlled language to develop efficient research equations: MeSH language (National Library of Medicine) and APA (American Psychological Association) or SIRC (Sport Information Resource Centre) thesauri; 4. Use the advanced features offered by major search engines: PubMed, Ovid, and EBSCOhost; 5. Use the quality indices available with bibliographical notices in order to select the most relevant publications. The programme also includes a presentation of bibliography management software (e.g. Zotero, EndNote, and Mendeley).
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Partim III : Techniques documentaires dans les activités physiques et rééducatives
- 2nd bachelor course on Learning Techniques (APPR0120) - Personal experience with browsing Medline/PubMed and the MeSH Database.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Partim II : Evidence Based Practice
6 hours of theory
Four classes (4×1.5 hours) will be offered as workshops where students should participate actively, giving their opinion on how to solve literature search and critical reading exercises. One of the classes will be dedicated to learning how to create a personal bibliography using the Zotero software application.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Partim II : Evidence Based Practice
Face-to-face
In-person classes: teacher-led exercises and pooling of skills.
Recommended or required readings :
Partim II : Evidence Based Practice
Lecture notes will be available via "my ULg".
The presentation slides used in class will be made available on MyULg (https://my.ulg.ac.be/MyULg). The include protocols for the use of major literature search tools, as well as advice on best practices.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Partim II : Evidence Based Practice
Written tests done straight after the sessions and/or written exam and/or continuous assessment and/or written report.
These classes are not subject to a specific evaluation.

Organizational remarks :
Partim II : Evidence Based Practice
For the examination procedures, please refer to the official rules available on the University website.
Students will come to class with the instructions they will have received on MyULg. They will also have read the exercises and thought about how to solve them (literature search and comparison of various types of articles based on a reading dossier). Classes are given on computers in the training room of the life sciences library. Students who own a laptop may bring it to class.
