Course contents :

This course is designed to help students perform bibliographical and documentary searches relevant to their chosen field of study. The course consists of a theoretical part (Part 1), which is dedicated to bibliographical research, and a practical part (Part 2), which focuses on documentary research.

In Part 1 of the course, students will learn the proper formatting of different kinds of bibliographical references.

part : Practical work

Part 2 of the course introduces students to information science as a gateway to subject-specific knowledge. Students will familiarize themselves with different kinds of research materials and sources, including library catalogues, discovery tools, bibliographies and databases. The basic principles of formulating and performing a search will be explained.

Learning outcomes of the course :

At the end of the course, students will be able to draw up an accurate bibliography containing different types of documents and use the citation formats appropriate to their chosen languages.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

use library sources independently
understand the information space and the different types of sources available
use different research tools such as catalogues, discovery tools, bibliographies, and databases
formulate and perform a correct search
assess search results and research strategies

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

Library visit, lectures, analysis of different types of sources, class exercises, computer exercises, discussion. Exercises are an integral part of the course and should be prepared in advance.

There are two course hours for each language. Students are required to take two sets of two hours, one set for each language studied.

Some collective course sessions will be planned. For other sessions, students will be divided into smaller groups.

Recommended reading

During the course, the instructors will advise on additional secondary reading and resources.

Assessment methods and criteria :

There are a total of 20 possible points for the two parts. Each part is worth 50%.

Written paper on a topic related to the themes provided by the lecturers.

part : Practical work

Oral examination, with open book preparation time. A list of topics to be memorized will be supplied at the end of the term.
