Course contents :
  • Introduction and basic concepts of addictology
  • Effects of psychoactive drugs
  • Why look into the relationship between drugs and crime
  • Political and legal aspects
  • Models of understanding
  • Trajectories, lifestyles, integrative model
  • Treatment and rehabilitation
Learning outcomes of the course :
With this course, students will:
a) think about the effects of the consumption of psychoactive drugs on a person's criminal trajectory
b) engage in a critical reflection on the main conceptual models that attempt to explain the relationship between drugs and crime
c) consider the limits of intervention and the right to intervene with addicts who are in the legal system
d) engage in a critical reflection on political and legal intervetion in the field of drugs, and on possible alternatives
e) think about the criminologist's role with regards to interventions with addicts

- 20-page written assignment, to be sent by e-mail (serge.brochu@umontreal.ca) by May 17 (worth 60% of the final mark).
