BOTA0402-1
Marine plant biology
Duration :
15h Th, 15h Pr, 3d FW
Number of credits :
Master in oceanography (120 ECTS)4
Master in oceanography (120 ECTS)4
Lecturer :
Anne Goffart
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Course contents :
Biodiversity and ecology of marine primary producers (mainly phytoplankton and macroalgae)
Learning outcomes of the course :
The aims of the course are :
  • to make students familiar with the importance of marine primary producers in the world ocean,
  • to acquire knowledge which allows to distinguish the major production systems,
  • to study the control of marine primary production by environmental factors,
  • to examine alterations of phytoplankton dynamics by human pressure,
  • to introduce concepts of management of coastal waters based on phytoplankton (including toxic species).
Emphasis is placed on Mediterranean species and ecosystems.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
General knowledge of biology and oceanology
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Practical courses consist in laboratory work in Liège, dealing with phytopigment determination (chemotaxonomy). The field course is organized by the end of May or at the beginning of June at Stareso (Calvi, Corsica). It focuses on the study of phytoplankton dynamics and on the response of communities to anthropogenic pressure.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face to face learning, schedule defined with the students
Recommended or required readings :
Reference scientific papers
Assessment methods and criteria :
Oral examination at the end of the practical course at STARESO
Work placement(s) :
3 days at STARESO (Calvi, Corsica) www.stareso.ulg.ac.be
