Course contents :
The theoretical course is divided into two parts:
1. A first one (3 lessons) devoted to taxonomy, including: - notions of nomenclature; - the species concept, and associated problems; - brief analysis of intraspecific variations; - nature and use of discriminant characters.
2. A second part (7-8 lessons) presenting, on a plylogenetical based approach, the diversity of heterotrophic organisms (unicellulars and metazoans, thus about 50 phyla).
Several scientific papers, as well as a movie, will be proposed in order to illustrate the course.
Practicals include 5(6) sessions of 4h, and are typically devoted to the morphological analysis of various groups of parasites, unicellulars or metazoans (apicomplexa, ciliates, flat worms, nematodes...). Each session is introduced by a theoretical lesson. Presence to practicals is mandatory. Absence must be justified by doctor's certificate.
A written report, by groups of 2 to 4 students, will be asked, to be submitted at the beginning of February. This report will concern problems of parasitology / prophylaxy. Informations will be given at the 1st theoretical lesson.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Theoretical exam is an oral one, in January. Student will have 30' to prepare a single question (transversal, ie covering several chapters). He (she) will have at disposal his own notes and various books provided by the teacher.
Practicals are judged on a report (see paragraph "Course Content") as well as on the assiduity and interset shown during lessons.
Theory and practicals count for 70 and 30% of the final estimation, respectively.
Work placement(s) :
There is no special field trip associated to this course. Nevertheless learned theory will be of great utility for the course "Stage" organized during the same Master BOE (bock 1)
Organizational remarks :
Theoretical lessons are given at the Botanical Institute (B22), at 9 AM (see dates in the programme).
Practicals are held at the Zoological Institute (Aquarium, I1), at 2 PM (dates will be specified at the 1st theory course).
