Study Programmes 2015-2016
BIOL0410-2
Introduction to Morphological Methods
Duration :
10h Th, 5h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in biomedicine2
Lecturer :
Marie-Claire Gillet
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Course contents :
The morphological methods are essential in biomedical research. The key-elements for organelles, cells and tissues  are studied. Microscopes and basic principles are first described. Then, current technical preparations from biological samples will be explained, such as  cuts, colourings, immunocytochemistry or immunohistochemistry. The key-elements for observations will be developped, establishing relation between structure and function of organelles, cells and tissues. The principal quantitative methods, as well as the emergent methods of imagery which locate the molecules, peptides, lipids on sections (molecular and chemical signature) largely used in nanomedicine will be approached.
Plan: 1. Introduction 2. Microscopes and basic principles 3. Preparation of cells and tissues 4. Organelle, cell and tissue observation
5. Quantification and emergent techniques
Learning outcomes of the course :
This course is an introduction to the morphological methods used into the other courses, in particular the histology and in biomedical research.
The objectives are the training of the traditional microscopic methods and the modern methods of in situ analysis of molecules.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Cellular biology
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Notes of course (dia) and practical work, bank of images and videos, didactic panels
