| The anthropology of migration has undergone various development which fall within academic traditions, historical contexts and policies which are specific to the United States and different European countries. An overview of these different approaches will be given and will be illustrated through the examination of work relating particularly to African migration to France, the transnational perspective, the 'transnational family', and refugees. Different thematic approaches will consider the concepts used and approaches which are favoured. More globally, this involves appreciating the specificity which an anthropological approach to migration has, focusing on an ethnographical area. Currently, when questions relating to migration have moved to the foreground, familiarising oneself with an anthropological approach could enable some areas of these migratory phenomenon which are little studied to be addressed. | |||||||||||

Learning outcomes of the course :

| Students will be able to critically describe the different anthropological approaches to migration. They will be aware of the importance of the historical and political context of this field of study and will be able to translate ethnographical material emerging from their field of study. | |||||||||||

| Students will write a final written report based on their ethnographic fieldwork and weekly, they will answer oral questions (instructions concerning these two exercises will be given on myULg and explained in class). | |||||||||||
