Course contents :
This course analyses thorougly selected topics which could not be covered in course AESS1216-1.
- Development of an experiment-based teaching approach
- Efficient use of computer tools in a chemistry classroom
- Numerical problem-solving methodology
- Learning by performing age- and scale-adapted research projects ("Discovery learning", "Forschendes Lernen") in science classes
- Introduction to epistemological reflexion: understanding the characteristics of the scientific method, the relationships with other disciplines, promoting ethical aspects
Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of their AESS studies or of their master with teaching focus, the future teachers will be able to:
- develop among their students a citizenship-oriented behaviour; - contribute to the intellectual development of each student; - guide the learning processes; - promote the development of transferable skills; - assess the results of their teaching practices; - work in a team-oriented way; - use efficiently modern communication techniques; - follow the legal regulations involving safety and health in a chemical environment.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
- Course AESS1216-1
- A good knowledge of chemistry at the bachelor level
- A good knowledge of the general didactics course
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Practical work is integrated into the theoretical course (development of an experiment-based teaching, assessment techniques ...)
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
This course follows course AESS1216-1. It also consists in seminars developing the various aspects described above. They take place on Wednesday afternoon, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m, during the whole second quadrimester. The students are informed about the programme and the timetable at the beginning of the academic year.
Recommended or required readings :
The students are provided with various printed documents concerning the different topics taught.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Each student will prepare a written proposal for a sequence of chemistry lessons, taking into account the didactical concepts developed during the chemistry didactics course. In addition, a public chemistry lesson, chosen within that sequence, will be given by each student during the examination period.Competences in epistemology will also be assessed, based on a discussion of recent articles. The global assessment will take the quality of these various works into account. A reasonable knowledge of the chemistry concepts involved in all these works is a necessary condition to obtain a global grading level equal to at least 10/20.
