Legal framework

A.M. of 03/05/1999 (MB : 07/08/1999) : Ministerial decree setting out the criteria for approving generalist doctors.

Presentation

Training for a general doctor in Belgium lasts at least three years and includes a theoretical part and a practical part, with a minimum internship of six months in a hospital and six months in the surgery of a general medical doctor acting as the internship supervisor. This training starts when the student successfully passes the sixth year of the doctor's training cycle (3rd Masters).
During the seventh year (4th Masters) the following training cycle should be followed:
  • theoretical training in general medicine (at least 200 hours, with a minimum 80% attendance rate)
  • compulsory internships include six months in a recognised hospital and six months in the surgery
    of an approved general medical doctor.



The complementary Masters in General Medicine begins after the doctoral degree has been obtained.
The complementary Masters includes:
  • two years of study for students holding the Certificate (theory courses and 12 months of specific internships).
  • three years of study for students having following theoretical courses (with proof of having successfully passed the course) but who have not carried out all the internships required.



Special conditions of access

This course is aimed at holders of a doctorate (Masters) in medicine who are authorised to practice in Belgium as well as students in the 4th year of the doctorate (Masters) in medicine.
Interested individuals should contact the head of the course to discuss their application.
Holders of non-EU diplomas should contact the Admissions Department (Certificate of Partial Specialisation Training).

  • One year of study (60 ECTS)

Notice The nature of the six month hospital internship to be conducted during the 4th Masters in Medicine is freely chosen. However, the Certificate in General Medicine is only awarded to students who have, during their 3rd or 4th Masters, completed one month of internship in each of the eight following disciplines: accident and emergency, ENT, paediatrics, urology, dermatology, gynaecology, psychiatry and geriatrics.

Notice 4 to 5 months general practice, with a maximum of 2 months with the same general practicioner ; 1 or 2 months in a primary health care centre, with a maximum of 1 month at the same centre.

Assessment

The complementary certificate in specific teaching for general medicine is delivered to medical doctors who:
  • have completed the required 12 month internship
  • have participated in a minimum of 160 hours of classes of the 200 hours delivered and succeeding in the examinations relating to the theoretical teaching.

A pass certificate is delivered to medical doctors who:
  • have participated in a minimum of 160 hours of classes of the 200 hours delivered and have successfully passed the examinations relating to the theoretical teaching.
