Presentation / Study programme

Orthopaedic manipulative physiotherapy (OMT) is a specialised branch of physical therapy dedicated to the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions based on clinical reasoning and using highly specific treatment approaches including manual techniques and therapy exercises. OMT is based on the scientific and clinical evidence, as well as on each patient's biological, psychological and social characteristics (IFOMPT, 2004).

Objective

This programme, offered in collaboration with the University of Ghent, lasts two years and awards students an academic certificate in manipulative physiotherapy that meets the criteria of the draft ministerial decree on the profession of "Manipulative Physiotherapist" (the programme is worth 75 ECTS credits, 30 of which are earned after students receive the official title of physiotherapist). The academic certificate also meets the criteria of the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT), allowing students to have their skills recognised internationally.

Special conditions of access / students concerned

This programme is aimed at :

- holders of a degree in physiotherapy ("Licence" or "Master") awarded by a Belgian institution of higher learning (university or higher school)
- holders of a Belgian diploma ("Graduat") awarded at the end of a short programme regulated by previous legislation. In this case, students are required to apply for the recognition of their experience
- holders of a similar degree in physiotherapy earned outside of Belgium. In this case, students are required to apply with the professors in charge of the programme

Number of students: 16 minimum (20 maximum)

Prerequisites :

- Compulsory prerequisites totalling 15 ECTS (in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, mobilization) will be required of all participants. This condition is necessary to meet the future managers of the Belgian Royal Decree defining the competence in "TMO" (75 credits including at least 30 credits earned after the basic training).

Duration of the training

The certificate programme takes place over a cycle of 2 years. New registrations in 2015-2016

2 years (60 ECTS : 25 in the 1st year and 35 in the 2nd year) including 384 h of face-to-face teaching, 966 h of personal work, 150 h of supervised clinical practice and 300 h for the preparation for the final dissertation.

Some courses could be taught in English.

Note : The programme cannot be split.
