History of the course:
  • 1994: Creation in Belgium, at the University of Liege (ULg) and the Catholic University of Louvain (KUL), of an official training course for perfusionists
  • 1999: Accreditation of the 2 Belgian schools by the European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (EBCP)
  • 2004: Decision by the two universities to standardise the programmes and to enlarge the training to fields requiring specific paramedical skills.

At the end of this course, students will be able to use a cardiopulmonary bypass pump in heart surgery or other types of surgery, any CPB for therapeutic purposes, such as circulatory or respiratory support systems, chemotherapy, etc. Students will be able to perform all autotransfusion techniques and perform any technical act requiring a particular technical skill for which they will have been trained.
