Legal framework

A.M. of 15.09.1979 (MB : 26.09.79), modified by A.M. of 3.05.99 (M.B. : 08.07.1999) : Ministerial Decree setting the special criteria for approving specialist doctors, internship supervisors and intern departments for paediatrics.

Presentation

This certificate aims to prepare doctors for authorisation as holder of the professional title of `competence¿ in neonatology.
The training aims at teaching skills in all aspects of foetal and neonatal medicine. In this sense, specialist doctors must actively participate in managing foetal pathologies tested for in utero with the various people involved in foetal medicine. In neonatal medicine, the doctor must manage all acute or chronic situations which a newborn may present from the point of delivery to departure from the neonatal department, from a curative and diagnostic point of view while providing sufficient information and psychological support to parents.

Special conditions of access / students concerned

This course is aimed at doctors who have specialised or who are specialising in paediatrics and who are authorised to practice in Belgium. Interested individuals should contact the head of the course to discuss their application (selection competition).
Holders of non-EU diplomas should contact the Admissions Department (Certificate of Partial Specialisation Training).

Duration of the training

  • Two years of study: The full time course includes theoretical training (30 credits per year) and clinical internships (30 credits per year). These 24 months of internship must be conducted in departments which are approved for paediatrics and include sections where all aspects of neonatal intensive and non-intensive care are permanently practised as well as foetal medicine. A minimum of 12 months must be carried out in the University Neonatal Intensive Care Department at the CHU-CHR.
The first of these two years of internship can be carried out within the complementary Masters in paediatrics.
  • Date of the start and end of the course: September to June
