Course objectives
The European interuniversity certificate in surgical pathology of the hand and peripheral nerves corresponds to a post-third cycle course aiming to train specialist doctors with particular skills in Surgery of the Hand and the Peripheral Nerves.

Program management
The programme is jointly organised by the Université Libre de Bruxelles, the Catholic University of Louvain, the University of Liege and the University of Liille II. The lecturers and teaching staff are appointed by the respective Faculties from the teaching staff of the Universities, university practitioners and staff from the University are asked to participate in teaching, without becoming lecturers. They hold the title of Assistant Lecturers.
The course involves two corresponding members per university, appointed by the Faculties. Secretarial activities are conducted on a rotating basis between the universities for a duration of four years. The coordinating structure organises the classes, ensures permanent evaluation of the quality of teaching, manages joint resources in particular in terms of organisation of practical work and decides on the fees.
Special conditions of access / students concerned
This course is aimed at doctors who have specialised or who are specialising in general surgery, orthopaedic surgery or plastic surgery. Interested individuals should contact the head of the course to discuss their application (admission is subject to a selection procedure by the jury and takes into account, among other things, previous university results and the candidate's motivation. Admission is also conditional upon approval by the jury of the plan of the internship year).
 Duration of the training

Deux années d'études
The Certificate includes training over a period of two years through 4 theoretical and practical modules (dissections) per year each consisting of 2 days (Friday and Saturday) organised in turn by each university with compulsory student attendance at 80% of classes (lectures: 104 hours, practical work: 24 hours). The teachers of each module belong to one or other of the four partner Universities, in order to ensure the maximum quality of teaching.
The programme includes, among other things, a clinical internship lasting a year in one (or several) specialised university departments, a theoretical oral exam and presentation of a thesis (or alternatively a publication accepted in an international level scientific journal). Finally, the coordinating university establishes in each university a list of seminars and tutorial exercises which students must participate in, to the extent of their availability. Students keep a list of the seminars which they have attended.
The thesis (or publication) is an original piece of work on a subject, the plan any choice of journal chosen for publication must be agreed in advance by the jury which assigns the student a director and a thesis reader, selected from lecturers on the teaching staff. The thesis supervisor may, if the jury considers it appropriate, be outside the teaching staff.

 Assessment
A first exam before the interuniversity jury is organised when the student has undertaken eight modules and has conducted the clinical internship. This consists of an oral exam which may or may not be preceded by a written test. Access to the second part of the Certificate, which includes presentation of a thesis (or of an accepted publication) is dependent upon this. Passing the oral defence of the thesis before the interuniversity jury leads to the student being awarded the Interuniversity Certificate of competence specialising in surgery of the hand and peripheral nerves.
