Legal framework

A.M. of 18.10.2002 (MB: 27.11.2002) : Ministerial decree setting out the special criteria for approving specialist doctors holding a specific professional qualification in clinical haematology as well as internship supervisors and internship departments in clinical haematology.

Presentation

This certificate aims to prepare doctors for authorisation as holder of the professional title of `competence¿ in clinical haematology. The course will allow students to acquire skills in clinical haematology including haematopoietic stem cell grafts (collecting grafts, laboratory techniques, transplantation clinic) and in clinical biology.

Special conditions of access / students concerned

This training is aimed at specialist doctors or doctors currently specialising in internal medicine and who are qualified to practice in Belgium. Interested individuals are requested to contact the head of the course in order for their application to be considered (selection competition). Applicants holding a degree from outside the European Union should contact the Admissions Department (Partial specialisation training certificate).

Duration of the training

Two years of study: Full time training includes theory classes (5 credits per year), clinical tutorial exercises (20 credits per year), seminars (5 credits per year) and clinical internships (30 credits per year) under the supervision of intern supervisors who have been recognised by the Clinical Haematology Teaching Committee. Internships include training to acquire practice in transplantation of haematopoietic stem cells (autotransplant, allotransplant, non-myeloablative transplants).

Quarter of the internship during the specific training on clinical haematology must be spent in rotation under the direction of a specialist and approved doctor of clinical biology in a minimum of two sections in an approved clinical biology laboratory which conducts haematology diagnoses.

The first of these two years of internship can be carried out in the framework of the complementary Masters in internal medicine.
