 Over the last decade, radiotherapy has evolved towards a speciality, with the specialist known as a clinical oncologist with a particular qualification in radiotherapy. The multidisciplinary nature of the speciality requires advanced training in various domains. Theoretical knowledge in physics and radiobiology constitute the foundations of modern radiotherapy. At the same time, the biology of tumors must be taught prior to the acquisition of a clinical competence in the various methods of treating cancer.

 A une formation de base (radiophysique, radiobiologie, radioprotection, biologie du cancer, principes thérapeutiques, législation) s'ajoute une formation supérieure intéressant l'oncologie générale (épidémiologie, prévention, dépistage, anatomo-pathologie, sémiologie, méthodes diagnostiques, stadification, facteurs pronostiques, résultats thérapeutiques), les principes généraux du traitement (oncologie chirurgicale et médicale, soins palliatifs, aspects psycho-sociaux), le traitement par les radiations ionisantes (modalités pratiques en fonction de la maladie, physique appliquée et planification dosimétrique, aspects techniques de la curiethérapie, imagerie, contrôle de qualité), le traitement par les cytostatiques (indications générales et particulières, pharmacologie clinique appliquée, élaboration et prescription de protocoles thérapeutiques, surveillance et traitement des effets secondaires)

 ainsi que la recherche en oncologie (évaluation des résultats, statistiques appliquées, participation à des essais thérapeutiques, recherche translationelle).

- Five years of study: two years of basic training (FUS) and three years of specialised training.
