VDOC0044-1  Hormonal assays in domestic animals

Duration :  15h Th, 15h Pr
Number of credits :
Doctoral training in veterinary sciences 3
Lecturer :
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
This lecture is based on our own experimental work on the quantification in biological fluids of steroïds hormones, pituitary gonadotrophins and diverse molecules usefull as tissues markers eg. pregnancy associated glycoproteins, pepsinogen, Anti-Mullerian Hormone etc...
The quantification of these molecules in biological fluids was realized in different physiological and pathological conditions in order to follow the functions of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal gonadal or surrenal axis. Similar and derived techniques as Elisa or IRMA were also used in order to follow the endocrine function of placenta, digestive mucosa or peripheral glands.
The basis of this teaching can be found in our scientific publications which are classified in a thematic and chronologic manner. A CD Rom containing all publications, power points of the lectures and of conferences given in English is available in the laboratory on simple request from the student.
This teaching belongs also to a summer course called : 'Physiologic and pathologic aspects of reproduction'.
This training is given to students coming from other centers or universities for an initiation, the development of a part of the thesis or cooperation programs. This training program contains RIA, RRA, IRMA, Elisa, hormones and proteins purification and finally different aspects of the follow up of cyclicity, pregnancy, reproductive and adrenal functions.
The practical training includes the realisation of an RIA and the interpretation of the results.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Answer to a series of very specific questions about the quantifications, their limits and their advantages.
Transmit the knowledges, the methodology to interprete correctly the results.
Initiate to use of the suitable statistic programs in function of the analyse and to present the results.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
A diploma awarded after a university education in scientific and technical subjects is required. The motivation is essential.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Practice works are organized on request. The students can make their quantifications ( steroid hormones, proteins, immunoglobulins...) in our laboratory.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
One time a year, flexible organisation.
Recommended or required readings :
Pulications, slights, proceedings and thesis of the department.
Assessment methods and criteria :
On request of the institution, an oral exam (1 hour) permits to measure the knowledge of the candidates and their integration of the training.
Work placement(s) :
Organizational remarks :
The matter is larger than the course. The choice is directed by the field interests of the students.
