Course contents :
| The course introduces students to various aspects of literary translation, including such professional considerations as contracts. This first part will focus on fiction and literature for children and 'young adults'. We produce original translations and compare existing translations.
We also examine the specific difficulties raised by distance in space or time. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| A first result of the course, which should probably be a prerequisite, is a perfect mastery of French.
Students will have learned how to become part of the text to be translated so as to 'hear' its voice and be able to recreate it, if need be through departures from a superficial kind of 'faithfulness'. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| An excellent knowledge of French (target language) and a good knowledge of English. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| It is of essence that students should have prepared.
Learning proceeds from confronting different approaches. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Face-to-face
Recommended or required readings :
| Texts are handed out. |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| The students' competence in literary translation can only be assessed on works they have done at home, namely four test translations of two to six pages from four different works introduced in class. The oral examination provides feedback on those tests. |
