Course contents :
| This course's objective is to present the historical, philosophical, political, diplomatic, legal economic and geopolitical factors that are at the heart of the European integration process.
To this end, the course first presents the concept of Europe through history, showing the importance of an idea that has existed on the continent for several centuries.
Then, the course presents the various stages in the building of Europe, focusing on the role of each state in European integration. The importance of political figures (de Gaulle, Kohl, Mitterrand, Thatcher, etc.) and of Europe's "couples" (e.g. France and Germany) is also taken into account. This approach also underlines the importance of the various national political contexts in the process of building Europe.
Finally, the course presents theories on European integration in order to highlight the multi-dimensional aspect of Europe's construction (intergovernmentalism, neofunctionalism, rational choice, social constructivism, neo-institutionalism, path dependence). |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| This course provides an overview of the historical, political, diplomatic, legal, economical and geopolitical factors that have given birth to the concept of a European Union, and also presents the delaying factors (regionalism, nationalism, culture, vision) that have opposed the integration process. The approach is multidimensional and pluridisciplinary, and studies the building of the EU from its very beginning to the present day. |
