Course contents :  
The main theoretical chapters are as follows:
Introduction
1. Variability of the atmosphere
2. Radiative processes and energy balance
3. Thermostatics
4. Atmosphere fundamental equations
5. Theory of atmospheric movements
(geostrophic approximation, thermal wind, atmospheric waves, etc)
6. The planetary boundary layer (atmospheric turbulence)
7. Saturation and condensation processes
8. Large-scale atmospheric circulation
9. Circulation in extratropical zones
(fronts)
10. Numerical modelling and forecasting

Learning outcomes of the course :  
The objective of the course is an introduction to atmopheric dynamics and meteorological processes.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Good knowledge of mathematics and mechanics, basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Exercises linked to the various chapters. Visit of a forest micrometerological site and illustration of acquisition and processing of meteorological data at this site.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
The course is given on the first semester. It is organised in a series of 3-hour lectures on Wednesday morning (Sep 22 to Dec 15, 2014) and on Tuesday afternoon (after Nov 4, 2014). 1st lecture : Sep 22, 2014, 9:00-12:00 Room 3.50 Building B6a 2nd lecture: Sep 29, 2014, 9:00-12:00 Room 3.70 Building B6c Field trip (visit of a micrometeorological forest site) planned on Tuesday October 28, 2014.
