Course contents :  
 
The course presents some of the most important recent developments in ethnic and migration studies. It is the logical follow-up of the introductory course « Sociology of Migration ». During the introductory session, we shall examine the formation and the evolution of ethnic and migration studies as a specific field of social and political research. We shall then move on to examine 3 of the most important « new » issues in the field:
-       Popular Music, Identity and ethnicity (4 sessions organized by Marco Martiniello)
-       Transnationalism (4 sessions organized by Jean-Michel Lafleur):
-       Environmental changes, migration and displacement (4 sessions organized by François Gemenne).
 
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The aim of the course is to provide the students with knowledge of some of the most important recent developments in ethnic and migration studies.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
 
Note that this is not a language course! A passive and active knowledge of written and spoken English is essential. Having taken the course « Sociology of Migration » is an advantage
 
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
 
The course shall use 2 pedagogical tools :
-       Lectures by the teachers: Marco Martiniello, François Gemenne et Jean-Michel Lafleur
-       Lectures given by external guests.
 
The students are required to prepare each session by reading the paper(s) assigned weekly.

Face-to-face and distance learning (individual work)
Recommended or required readings :  
Papers to read will be circulated before each session
Assessment methods and criteria :  
For the first session: The students will write a paper of 15 pages in one of the 3 areas of the course and discuss it with the professor responsible for that area;
