Course contents :
|
| The question of democratic processes is adressed each year trhrough the study of a specific theme. For the year 2012-2013, the course will be based on one of the Ronald Inglehart's book on global scale value change. The exact book will be decided at the beginning of the course. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| Through the discussion of a specific theme linked to democratic processess at global scale, the goal of the course will be to increase following skills :
- reading a theoretical text in english
- detect how an argumentation is articulated
- realize a synthesis of the argumentation
- make a pedagogically accessible presentation of this synthesis for other students (in french)
- keep a critical stance towards well-established theories or famous scientists.
Discussion will take place in FRENCH but student who prefer to present in English will be allowed to. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| Being able to read sociological literature in english. Being able to read and interpret simple statistical tables and figures. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
|
| The course is a seminar around a book that will be read in common
- all students are supposed to prepare a part of the book and to present it (in group) in front of the class in order to foster a collective discussion
- the teacher will be involved in the preparation of each chapter with the students. |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
|
| Students are supposed to read a part of a book and to prepare a lecture on their reading. The teacher or an assistant helps preparing the lecture. |

| THERE IS NO COMPULSORY TEXTBOOK
The seminar will be based on one of the two following books
- Pippa Norris et Ronald Inglehart (2011) : "The sacred and the secular", Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, Mass.
- Ronald Inglehart et Christian Welzel (2005) :
"Modernization, cultural change and democracy. The humain developmen sequence"
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, Mass.
ONE COPY OF THE BOOK WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR THE STUDENTS WHO DO NOT WANT TO BUY IT

| The final note will be attributed to the students according to their presentation and participation for the seminar.
