Course contents :  
The course introduces the particularity of qualitative approaches though successive stages in a scientific research (data collection, analysis and interpretation) and presents an overview of selected analytical techniques : discourse analysis, content analysis and grounded theory methodology (GTM).
Practical work allows the students to test their knowledge by conducting and analyzing of an interview.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The student will be able to
  • given a research question, decide whether a qualitative or a quantitative approach is relevant
  • accurately define qualitative terms
  • differentiate content analysis and discourse analysis from grounded theory methodology (GTM)
  • conduct an interview
  • actively participate to a collective analysis of text material
  • summarize results from a collective research
  • create accurate slides
  • speak in public
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Introduction to methodology in social sciences
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
  • Theorical sessions are ex cathedra teaching, using slides.
  • Practical work consists in realizing a qualitative research (elaborating a research question, conducting and analysis of an interview).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Face to face for theoretical lessons and practical work.

There is no syllabus. An extended list of the key notions is provided. A PDF version can be downoaded from the course online platform; a printed version is available at the Store of Liege University Press (B8 Building).

Assessment methods and criteria :  
  • Examination (individual) Written examination in first session; oral examination in second session.
  • Logbook (collective) Each team helds a logbook troughout the practical work.
  • Presentation (collective)
Practical works are organised (and evaluated) in first session only.
The written examination, the logbook and the presentation are each worth 33 % of the global note. Such a mean is calculated only when the note of each part is greater than 8/20. If it is not the case (one of the note is less than or equals 8/20), the global note will equal the weakest note.
