SBIM0484-1  Immunology of tumours

Duration :  10h Th, 10h SEM
Number of credits :
Master in Biomedicine, Research Focus, 2nd year4
Lecturer :  Nathalie Jacobs
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
The different notions studied are listed above:
  • Description of the immune response against tumours (innate and adaptive anti-tumoural immunity)
  • Description of tumour immuno-escape mechanisms: non-recognition of the tumour by the immune system and tumour inhibitory effects on the immune system
  • Immunotherapy of tumours: antibodies directed against tumour, cytokines and immune cells, anti-tumoral vaccines
Learning outcomes of the course :
The goal of this course is to train the student to be able to understand the progress in tumour immunity and new immunotherapeutic approaches to treat cancer. This learning is based on:
  • The knowledge and understanding of the principal immune system mechanism of action against tumour development
  • The knowledge and understanding of the principal immuno-escape mechanisms of cancer cells
  • The knowledge and understanding of immunotherapeutic protocols used to fight cancer
  • Critical analysis of scientific papers concerning tumour immunity
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Basic immunology course
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The course is divided in 10 lessons (2 hours):

  • The first lesson is done jointly with the Vaccine course on Basic Immunology recalls (quiz).
  • The next 6 lessons are face-to-face lessons dedicated to the different parts of the Tumour Immunology course
  • Fellow up by 3 seminars devoted to student presentations of scientific papers related to the previous lessons.

On student demand a revision lesson (questions-answers) could be organised
Recommended or required readings :
