The impact of the main determining factors for health is illustrated through the variations observed with regard to life expectancy, life expectancy when in good health and morbidity indicators.
Three sessions cover the socio-environmental determining factors starting with the reality of social inequalities (mortality and differential morbidity). To explain these gaps, a series of determining factors are discussed: modes of living, accessibility to health care, physical environment (habitation, work…) and especially psychosocial dimensions of life conditions. Public health strategies to be developed to reduce these social inequalities relating to health are also presented.
Two sessions are devoted to physical activity to allow students to acquire the basics required to understand the important role of physical activity and the priority that should be given to promoting an active lifestyle. Several chapters are covered: Representations of physical activity, Repercussions of the practice, Recommendations with regard to physical activity (PA), Measuring physical activity, Promoting physical activity.
With regard to the food module, by the end of the course the student will be capable of: Describing the links between food and health, understanding the updated nutritional recommendations for Belgium, Calculating the recommended nutritional energy and non-energy intake for a given person, Explaining what is meant by a balanced diet from a practical point of view, Putting forward objective arguments with regard to new developments in the area of nutrition. These are: Prebiotics and probiotics, Genetically modified organisms (O.G.Ms), Explaining the main trends from the results of food surveys in Belgium, Putting forward a critical opinion with regard to allegations relating to nutrition, Explaining the factors that determine food choices.
One session will illustrate the psychosocial dimension of alcoholism. The multifactorial etiology of alcoholism will be presented paying particular attention to integration models and by focussing on the socio-economic aspects.
A session will be devoted to self-medication.
Two sessions will be developed on the subject of sustainable development. By the end of the two modules, the student will be able to understand and illustrate: the importance of the consistency of all the actions that impact on health and sustainable development thanks to the social, economic and environmental factors that relate to health, the importance of the role and responsibilities of local, regional national and/or international politicians with regard to health, -the importance of transversal, partnership and participative methods of working, the importance of reinforcing social cohesion and a better adaptation dynamic adapted to current and future needs of populations.
