RBIO0130-1  Radiobiology - radioprotection

Duration :  6h Th
Number of credits :
Bachelor in medicine, 3rd year1
Lecturer :  Chantal Humblet, Philippe Martinive, Véra Pirlet
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
Radiobiology studies the impact of radiation on living material. From an educational point of view, it aims at providing the scientific bases for radiological protection measures and helping students not only to assess risks and benefits of radiation in the medical, research and industrial fields, but also to apply major health physics principles to other potentially noxious agents in the environment. The course includes: - Medical techniques using ionizing radiation and medical exposure risks - Health physics principles: justification, optimization, dose limitations - Radioactive radiation and contamination - Health physics units - Organization: prevention, monitoring, royal decree of 20/07/2001, review of regulatory provisions For further information: short bibliography and reference books
Learning outcomes of the course :
Medical use accounts for 98% of human radiation doses whereas industrial use only accounts for 2%.
It seems useful to make medicine students more aware of the radiological protection of staff, the general public and patients.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Physics and Biology courses.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The Health Physics course (2 x 2 hours) follows the Radiobiology course (2 x 2 hours).
Recommended or required readings :
Slides and syllabus made available to students.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Questions with short answers and multiple choice questions.
Work placement(s) :
