Course contents :

| Theoretical courses The main aspects of the trophic relations and the co-evolution concepts between plants and insects are presented in order to describe the plant defence mechanisms naturally occurring. The insect physiology, particularly related to the digestive, nervous and endocrinous systems is developed. The different alternative pest control methods to replace the use of conventional insecticides are presented : the use of entomopathogene bacteria, virus and fungi, the use of entomophagous predators and parasites, the application of diversified biocid substances from plants and fungi, the use of insect growth regulators such as hormone mimetics, the use of semiochemicals and transgenic plants, ...
Group work In order to use the theoretical notions, a problematic situation in terms of pest control (pests - crop plant associations in particular tropical regions) is proposed to realize a work to present the realistic and avilable methods to apply to sustainably control particular crop pests. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| On basis of different functional aspects of insect organisation at the individual level and their relations with the environment, the course aims at presenting a broad range of alternative pest control methods that can replace conventional insecticides After completing the course the student is expected to - master the different available pest control methods (conventional, alternatives including biotechnological methods), - assess the risks related to different groups of pests and the usefulness of applying pest control, - assess the diversity and availability of pest control methods according to different situations (pest-host plant associations, geographical situation), - propose sustainable pest control methods. |
