| PHYS2022-2 | Physics 3 : Waves and quanta

| Duration : | 20h Th, 10h Pr |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Geoffroy Lumay |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the second semester |
Course contents :
| The course is divided into two parts. The first one is devoted to material and electromagnetic waves. The second one is an introduction to quantum mechanics.
Chapters of waves part : material waves, electromagnetic waves, light, waves propagation, polarization, inetrfernces and diffraction.
Main themes of quantum part : the first quanta theory and the wave-matter duality. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| The aim of the course consists in
- teaching mechanical and electromagnetic waves as well as related phenomena (propagation, interferences, diffraction,...). The student will acquire the main concepts which will be suitable for their future optics and electromagnetism courses.
- emphasizing the experiments leading the physicists to reconsider the classical physics and to propose the quanta theory. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| Physics and mathematics learned during 1st bachelor. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| Exercises sessions in order to illustrate the theoretical concepts teached in theoretical courses. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| - The course is organized during 2nd period.
- Theory : 20 h
- Training sessions : 10 h |
Recommended or required readings :
| - Copy of the slides (pdf)
- 1st Bachelor book of physics : "Physics for Scientists and Engineers 6E" by Serway and Jewet |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| Written exams (theory and exercices) in May-June.
- 2nd session in august-september : written exams (theory and exercices).
- Final quotation : 2/3 for theory and 1/3 for exercices
Only scientific calculators with a one line alphanumeric display are allowed during the exam. |
