Duration :  45h Th, 25h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in physics, 2nd year7
Lecturer :  Serge Habraken, John Martin
Coordinator :  Serge Habraken
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
All year long, with partial in January
Course contents :
The course is divided in two parts:
  • Geometrical and physical optics
  • Electromagnetism
Electromagnetism : electrostatics, magnetostatics, electrodynamics - Maxwell's equations, conservation laws and electromagnetic radiation.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The aim of the course consists in teaching electromagnetism and physical + geometrical optics based on Maxwell's equations.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Physics and Mathematics learned during 1st Bachelor
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
See next section
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The course about optics is organized during the 1st period. Theory: 20h Lab and training sessions: 10+5h
The course about electromagnetism is organized during the 2nd period. Theory: 25h Training sessions: 10h
Recommended or required readings :
Optics: Note book and slide copies are available (pdf files). Additonal syllabus about geometrical optics

Electromagnetism : The slides of the theoretical course and a collection of exercices will be made available on myULg (pdf files). Recommended book : "Introduction to electrodynamics", D. J. Griffiths, Prentice Hall
Assessment methods and criteria :
Optics: A written exam takes place at the end of the 1st period.
A second session of exam (written) is organized in Aug/Sept. Lab reports are quoted. The quotation is taken into account at a level of 25% of the global total. Electromagnetism exam : A written test covering exercices (35%) and theoretical concepts/global comprehension (65%) is organized in June and August.
According to the "paysage" decree, the certification is validated from a notation = 10/20.
