PHYS2002-3  General Physics I

Duration :  40h Th, 35h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelier en sciences mathématiques8
Lecturer :  John Martin
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
The general physics course is an introduction to the modeling of observable phenomena. The course material covers the key concepts of classical physics, especially classical mechanics. Table of contents : 1. Physics and measurement 2. Motion in one dimension 3. Vectors and motion in three dimensions 4. The laws of motion 5. Circular motion and applications of Newton's laws 6. Work, kinetic energy and potential energy 7. Linear momentum and collisions 8. Rotation of a rigid object about a fixed axis 9. Angular momentum and torque 10. Static equilibrium 11. Oscillatory motion 12. Wave motion 13. Sound waves 14. Superposition and standing waves 15. Universal gravitation
Learning outcomes of the course :
The primary goal is to introduce the students to the teaching and academic requirements while giving them a firm grounding in physics. Working and reflection methods proper to physics will be assimilated, while emphasizing their relevance to the study of other branches of science.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Lower-secondary and upper-secondary education in scientific disciplines and mathematics.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Three lab sessions illustrate the course material. A session with experimental demonstrations is planned. Exercise sessions are organized on a weekly basis.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face course.
Recommended or required readings :
A pdf version of the slides, notes and exercice sheets are available on myULg (eCampus). Reference book : "Physics for Scientists and Engineers", R. A. Serway and J. W. Jewett, (Brooks Cole Edition, 2013) Ed. 9
