| Duration : | 46h Th, 16h Pr, 24h Mon. WS |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Alain Seret, David Strivay |

Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the first semester, review in January |
Course contents :
| Physics for first-year university students in life sciences : geometric optics, particle mechanics, solid mechanics, thermal physics, fluid mechanics, mechanical waves. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| Introduction to physics domain described in "Course contents" and to some applications of these concepts to life science as well as learning of the scientific method. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| Vectors, units, kinematics and Newton's laws.
Basic mathematics (algebra, analyse, elements of geometry and trigonometry) are also needed. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| Experiments are performed in live and video documents are projected during the courses. They are full part of the course contents. The course is accompagnied by practical works where students are teached to the solving of exercices and the use of experimental devices. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| The theoretical course is face-to-face with active participation of the students for the solving of exercices. Much more active participation of the students is expected for the practical works. |
Recommended or required readings :
| Textbooks.
- "Optique: première approche" by A. Seret (2013). This book (in french) is available as on-line eBook or pdf files or as a printed book distributed by Presses Universitaires de Liège (Liège, Belgium). A pdf file with short solutions to the exercices proposed in the book is also downloadable.
- The other parts of the lectures will be based on Physique by Benson (Edition De Boeck) and Physics of the Life Science de Newman (available via the ULg intranet on SpringerLink)
Exercice and (short) solutions manuals are also available at Presses Universitaires de Liège (Liège, Belgium). Laboratory manuals are also available (more informations will be given during the first courses). |
