PHYS0957-1  Physics of Fluids

Duration :  20h Th, 10h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in physics, 2nd year3
Lecturer :  Hervé Caps
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
Table of contents
- physical concept of fluid
- cinematics
- dynamics
- laws of conservation
- fluid flows at low and high Re
- dimensional analysis
- instabilities
Learning outcomes of the course :
The lecture will aim to give the student the physical and mathematical basis for understanding phenomena dealing with fluids. Physical concepts providing a macroscopic description of the fluid will be presented. The classical laws for the fluid motion will then be derived. A special attention will be paid on a physical and intuitive description of the different phenomena. Within this context, dimensional analysis will be introduced and used, among others, in the case of fluid instabilities.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Good methematical and physical basis of one year in physical sciences is recommanded.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Following the theoretical lectures, practical examples will be solved in classroom.

During these periods, students are grouped by 5 and are asked to solve problem taken from past and present scientific literature. At the end of the 2h period, each group presents his result. The groups are helped by the professor.

Experiments emphasizing the fluid behavior in different context will be performed : rheological fluids f.ex.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face.
Recommended or required readings :
Slides are provided in a PDF format at the first lecture.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Oral/written exam.
