Course contents :  
This course aims at introducing the concepts that frame Science Teaching and Learning to students, as well as the main results of research in this area.
The course focuses on the following contents:
- State of science teaching in primary education in Wallonia Brussels Community
- Students' (mis)conceptions - the conceptual change
- Exploration of scientific phenomena
- Structuring of knowledge
- Assessment in science
- Teacher education and training
- History of science and epistemology
- School resources and textbooks
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Students will understand the main didactical concepts that structure science learning and teaching. They will be able to step back from the usual teaching practices in science and will use the didactical tools and concepts in a teaching practice and/or in teacher education.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
It is advised to attend « Analyse critique des courants psychopédagogiques » (Marcel CRAHAY - PEDA2174-1) and « Analyse des processus d'enseignement » (Dominique LAFONTAINE - PEDA1051-3) before or during the same academic year.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Group or individual work (depending of the number of participants)
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
The course is organized as follows:
  • 5 face-to-face sessions of 3 hours (lectures)
  • A folder of papers related to some complements or self-study themes
  • Practical work : interview of some students + written report relating thereto.
Recommended or required readings :  
A folder with papers and/or book chapters is provided. Power point slides will be available before each lecture.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Written examination (lectures + required readings)
20% of the overall score will be reserved to the report related to the partical work (see above). An overall score of zero will be issued if the report is not presented.
Work placement(s) :  
Students who chose « Formation pédagogique approfondie pour l'enseignement fondamental et secondaire inférieur » have to complete the internship YSTG9010-1 during the same academic year that they attend the course "Enseignement et apprentissage des sciences". For more information, see educational commitments YSTG9010-1.
There is no internship related to this course for students who chose "Formation initiale des enseignants"
