| MECA0034-1 | Rational use of energy in buildings

| Duration : | 30h Th, 30h Pr |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Vincent Lemort |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the first semester, review in January |
Course contents :
| - Thermal exchanges between human and ambient. Calculation of comfort conditions.
- Analysis of the microclimate.
- Calculation of heating, ventilation and cooling demands.
- Air circulation in ventilated spaces, local ventilation through suply/extraction ; global ventilation by dillution.
- Local and global heating, heat emittors (water-based ; air-based ; radiating ; accumulating).
- Electrical heating and heat pumps.
- Air-conditioning systems: central control, terminal units, fan coils, induction units.
- Control strategies
- Use of solar energy
- Use of geothermal energy
- Combines heat and power (CHP)
- Air-conditioning of vehicles. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| The main objective of the course is to give to the students the required elements to design and operate air conditioning equipments applied to buildings as well as to vehicles. The course is also an illustration and an integration of matters like applied thermodynamics, heat and mass transfers, fluid mechanics and thermal systems |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| MECA0006-1 |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| Similar organisation as for the workshops of MECA0002-1 et MECA0006-1: exercises performed on computers using EES software and laboratories |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
- 12 sessions made of 2h of theory and 2h of practice
- 1 session of laboratory ou 1 visit of a commercial building equipped with a HVAC plant (presented in a report to be sent before the date of the exam)
Recommended or required readings :
| Slides sent to the students |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| The exam consists in one question of theory (3 points) and two exercises (7 points per exercise). The theoretical question is prepared on a sheet and is defended orally. The two exercises are solved on a computer (by means of EES software) and will be defended orally. Students can access the slides of the lecture for solving the exercises. The report about the laboratory session will account for 3 points.
The second session exam is organized in an identical way as during the first session
