Course contents :  
  • Derivation of the equations, basic principles.
  • Quasi-3D approach, absolute and relative frames of reference, potential flows, cascade flows.
  • Cascade flows: mass, momentum and energy balances, correlations for compressors and turbines, resolution of the Euler equations using finite volumes.
  • Meridonal flows: design procedure and analysis procedure.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
To understand the physics of the flow in turbomachines.
To understand the methods used for aerodynamic design of turbomachines.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Aerodynamics.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Projects are organized which consist in designing a compressor or turbine stage and analysing its performance, using MATLAB or FORTRAN programming.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
8 sessions of 4 hours each are organized during the first part of the academic year.
Recommended or required readings :  
Course notes are available, as well as a collection of solved exercises. These notes are regularly updated and are distributed during the course.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
The examination consits in presenting the results of the project.
