Course contents :
After a discussion of the complex and uncertain notion of "grammar" we will present various procedures for discovery and analysis of its functioning, and these will be used throughout the course.
The following chapter will be devoted to a critical examination of that which grammarians refer to as the "nature" and "function" of words, and the different nomenclatures attached to each of these concepts. We will analyse the appropriateness of these nomenclatures for French linguistics, and how they function within it.
Then, in the light of the preceding analysis, we will discuss in subsequent chapters the different natures/functions of "verbs", "adjectives", and "adverbs". We will also discuss "simple phrases" and "complex phrases". The two last chapters will deal with orthography and punctuation.
