Course contents :  
We will explore the role of medieval Latin literature in the creation and extension of Romance literatures (c. 1100-1350), through the discussion of texts arising from cultural and linguistic contact. Special attention will be paid to the Latin texts that form the base for Romance traditions and/or are in dialogue with these, as well as to Latin texts that deal with Romance literature and theorise it and its literary language.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The student will be able to read and understand texts in medieval Latin, and know how to situate it with respect to other Romance literatures. Broad knowledge and conceptual proficiency in the scope of cultural and linguistic contact in Europe between the Latin texts analysed and the vernacular traditions in Romance languages, as well as its history and geography.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Basic knowledge of classical Latin.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
General presentation of Latin literature of the Middle Ages. In-depth reading of one text, and comparison with other texts in Latin and in Romance language. Use of reference dictionaries and online resources.

Lectures and seminars.

A dossier and full bibliography will be provided during the course.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Oral exam. Discussion of course contents, reading and translation of one of the excerpts read and commented during the course (50%), presentation of a group project (teams of 4-5 students) on a subject agreed on with the instructor (50%).
