Course contents :

| The course is devoted every year to the study either of a literary subject or of a given literary work (the readings of other Latin texts being not excluded to enrich the commentary and locate the work in its historic, cultural, stylistic and literary context). In collaboration with the students, the teacher elaborates an original translation for each of the studied text as well as a commentary pointing out the most remarkable aspects of the text. He introduces various readings methods (including narratological and statistical methods) as well as the bibliographic references. The reading of texts also involves the study of the most significant phenomena in the domains of the phonetics, the morphology, the lexicon and the syntax. This linguistic comment leans on grammatical reference models (a memorization and an active knowledge of these models is required).
The student will prepare not only the translation of texts studied during the course, but also, for the examination at the end of year, the reading, the translation and the commentary of other texts. He will demonstrate his ability to use personally the methods and the techniques he learned during the course. The reading of scientific papers on the studied author or subject will also be expected |
