Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
All year long
Course contents :
The theoretical part of this course consists in the linguistic description of the phonological, morphological and syntactic systmes of Classical Latin. The study of phonology and morphology is based on a critical reading of main linguistic descriptions. The description of the syntactic structures of Classical Latin (cases syntax, subordinate clauses syntax) is based on the study of grammatical models (memorization and active knowledge of those models are required) and on the reading of texts from the end of the republican period (Cicero and Sallustius...).

The practical part of this course is dedicated to exercises on the language (morphological and syntactic analysis exercises, translations, proses, various exercises in lexicography and syntax). The students prepare by themselves the reading, the translation and the grammatical commentary of the text mentioned above, but this homework is completed by exercises during the course.

New vocabulary lists have to be memorized. Scientific papers in the field of the synchronic or diachronic description of the Latin language have to be red, summarized and criticized.

Tests are distributed all over the year, to allow the student to assess his progress and the work still needed.
Learning outcomes of the course :
In the end of the course, the students must have acquired:
1. a perfect command of the lexicon and the Latin language structures in order to allow an easy reading of the Classical Latin prose-writers, the translation of Classical texts and the imitation or literary prose;
2. a perfect knowledge of the main phonological, morphological and syntactic phenomena;
3. the ability to apply to Latin the methods of a functional linguistic description.
