Course contents :  
Systematic review of the Latin language structures (vocabulary, morphology, syntax) :

- memorization of a basic vocabulary;

- review of nominal and verbal morphology, as well as the morphology and use of the adjectives-pronouns;

- in connection with the review of the morphology, study of the basic syntactic structures (usage of subjunctive in main clause, fo the infinitive, of the participle, of the Gerundium and the Gerundivum, of the comparative and superlative adjectives...).

This review is base on the reading, the translation and the grammatical commentary of a work of a Classical Latin author (Nepos, Suetonius...) and on various exercises (morphology, syntax, translation, prose).

The course includes an introduction to the history of the Latin language, from the Indo-European languages to the Romance languages, and an initiation into the phonetics and into the phonology of the Classical Latin.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
In the end of the course, the students must have acquired :
- an ability to use the acquired knowledge on the occasion of morphological and syntactic exercises, translation and understanding of Latin texts (in order to take the most fo the Latin Exercises and the Latin authors courses) ;
- a knowledge of the broad outline of the history of the Latin language as well as of the main phologic phenomena.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
The course is in theory designed for students who have already a knowledge of the Latin language (Secondary school level), but is open to students who begin to learn Latin, but, in this case, the work needed is of course more important.
